REINDEER FARM VISIT TOUR 2,5 h – ROVANIEMI

We at Porohaka wish to introduce you to the tradition of reindeer herding. The group size of the travellers arriving to us is small, so we can offer you personal service and tell you in detail what reindeer herding is. If you don’t find availability you can still ask us in chat. We don’t put all availability on internet.

FEED REINDEER DURING REINDEER FARM VISIT

We welcome you with open arms! During the reindeer farm visit we will visit and feed our reindeer herd of as much as 100 reindeer! During the feeding, the reindeer come very close so you will notice just how charming and wise they are.

This is tour is meant for people who are able to visit us with their own transportation. This is not including pick-up and dropp-off service.

We want to make sure your visit to us is a once in a lifetime experience and our program is suitable for people of all ages. However, if you have any condition of reduced mobility or very small children travelling with you, we kindly ask you to contact us in advance so that we are able to make sure everything is safe and that the day is a success for everyone.

Description

The tour begins with a visit to our reindeer farm. To get there, we will take a short snowmobile ride from our home with you sitting comfortably in a sleigh pulled by the snowmobile. After arriving to the reindeer farm, it is time to feed the reindeer.

We will take the reindeer food with us on the sleigh and move inside the enclosure where the reindeer stay. In the enclosure the moving happens with a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile. You will get to sit on the sleigh and watch as the reindeer come close as we feed them.

We will take a short stop halfway through the feeding, so that you have enough time to observe. Reindeer are friendly but naturally shy, so remember that our actions should be calm. We will spend about two hours in the reindeer enclosure.

After arriving back to our home, we will enjoy hot beverages and home baked cakes in our Laplanders hut by the open fire. You will have the chance to ask questions and share your thoughts about the day.

Age limit for child is 5 years. We don’t recommend the tour for very small children because of the coldness.

Please note that in this tour there is no reindeer sleigh riding available. One other of our excursions includes reindeer sleigh riding.
No pick-up service included this tour. Pick-ups are included in other tours.
For safety reasons, we do not recommend the trip for children under 5 years old.

It was a wonderful day at the reindeer farm, highly recommended! We first drove - pulled by the snowmobile - into the forest to the female reindeer, who we were allowed to feed. Everyone had fun. Then we were allowed to go to Katja's house, where we had delicious reindeer soup. In the afternoon we went on a sleigh ride. Beautiful. Finally there were hot drinks and cake. Katja and Wesko did such a great job and were so welcoming!

-An unforgettable experience-Yesterday we visited Katja and her reindeer farm. The entire day couldn't have been nicer.-Pickup/transportation went smoothly. (Distance from Rovaniemi approx. one hour; pick up around 10 a.m.)-When we arrived at the farm, we were greeted very hospitably. A big plus point and a decisive factor for us when booking: small groups, no mass tourism! We were 9 people in total.-First we were dressed (recommended because you have a lot to do with the animals and could possibly get dirty). We were then divided into 2 even smaller groups. One group drove with Katja and the snowmobile through the forest towards the reindeer enclosure to feed the female reindeer - it was unbelievable how beautifully the animals can live there. A true paradise.The other group was allowed to start with the reindeer sleigh ride. Approximately 2km through a beautiful winter landscape, a unique experience. After half the route we stop briefly to take a few photos :)We were told a lot of exciting things about the reindeer and how they are kept.-Duration of feeding and reindeer sleigh ride each one hour. Afterwards we were invited to Katja's house for lunch (reindeer soup). We have rarely experienced so much hospitality on a trip, thank you very much! A very personal experience with such a small group.After the lunch break, the two groups swapped and spent another hour with/with the reindeer.At the end we met around the fire in the Finnish barbecue hut (Kota) for coffee/hot chocolate and homemade cake from Katja. We reviewed the day together and were picked up again around 4 p.m.We can wholeheartedly recommend the trip.The reindeer are in good hands with this great family. Thank you for everything!

We had a wonderful and relaxing day at the reindeer farm with our two boys (9 & 11). Katja is really a great host and her reindeer are incredibly nice and sweet. We learned a lot about reindeer, but also about life as a reindeer farmer. We would do it again at any time and can recommend it without reservation.

Our visit to this reindeer farm was absolutely amazing! The host was incredibly warm and welcoming, making us feel at home right away. She took such great care of both us and the animals, ensuring we had a truly personal and authentic experience.One of the best parts was the peaceful location—tucked away in the middle of nature with no tourists in sight. It felt like a hidden gem! She spent quality time with the animals, patiently explaining everything and answering all our questions in detail.As a lovely touch, she even offered us a small cake and hot chocolate, which made the experience even more special. An Unforgettable, Authentic Reindeer ExperienceWe chose Porohaka Reindeer Farm because we were looking for an authentic experience away from the tourist crowds, and it did not disappoint. Katja provided a very personal experience where you could forget you’re a tourist. It was just our family with her, as she keeps the groups small, which made the entire visit feel relaxed and intimate.Katja welcomed us warmly and ensured we were all well-prepared for the cold, providing extra layers where needed so that we could fully enjoy the experience in comfort. We then had a ride on a sleigh pulled by her snowmobile through the forest to the reindeer enclosure, the ride itself was a great experience in a wonderful setting.The enclosure was large and once inside we could disembark and feed the reindeer in our own time. The reindeer themselves were wonderful—gentle, inquisitive, and happy to come up and be fed by us. There was no rush at all, just plenty of time to enjoy being with these beautiful animals in their peaceful surroundings. Katja provided lots of information about her family's history of reindeer farming and it was lovely chatting with her and learning more about the reindeer.Thank you so much, Katja! This was truly an unforgettable experience and the highlight of our trip.

I cannot begin to describe how magical the entire day was. I went with my partner and my parents and we all felt like Porohaka Reindeer farm was the highlight of our entire holiday around Finland! We learned so much about the reindeer and the history of the farm. Plus the homemade soup at lunch was such a great treat to warm our bellies halfway through our tour. Honestly more than worth the price and I can’t recommend this trip enough!

What could I possibly say about this unprecedented experience?? If you’re reading this review, book your reindeer experience immediately. Honestly, one of the best experiences I’ve had ever! We were a family of five and we are so grateful to everyone at Porohaka reindeer farm for their love and attention to detail. The reindeer, the sleigh ride, the food, the fire and the feeding… don’t know what was best! The hospitality is by far one the best I’ve ever had. A million thanks for this once in a lifetime experience ❤️❤️❤️ We leave Rovaniemi with our hearts filled with gratitude and love. Worth every penny 🙏

If you are looking for insight into traditional Lapland living, this is the tour for you. The couple who own this tour could not have been more welcoming or friendly. It is clear they have a passion for their work and are very proud of it. We had a lovely day there involving feeding the reindeer, a reindeer sleigh ride, eating homemade soup and blueberry dessert. Highly recommend.
